Restoration of field gate, cast iron posts and cast iron rabbit fencing. Detail of cast iron rabbit fencing which was extremely difficult to cast.
On getting a very angry phone call from Lord Martin Fitz-Allen Howard, I went to see him. When I arrived he was picking pieces of iron out of the grass. He exclaimed that the gardener had driven the lawn mower into the fence destroying the cast ironwork and then driven the Lawn mower into the Ha-Ha exclaiming ‘I’ve sacked him of course’. We managed to reconstruct one panel and our founders used it as a pattern for casting several panels which Lord Martin loved. They were cast in SG iron so it could not happen again
Pontifract Town Hall balcony.
Restoration and repairs.
The repaired and restored balcony refitted and basking in the sun.
The balcony was used after this as the town took part in various ceremonies. to remember its history
These two pictures were taken before we removed the balcony, however the cast iron brackets were left in the stonework as they were firmly fixed and removing them would have created too much disruption to the wall. Some castings were replaced and the handrail is all new.
for health and safety reasons the balcony was tested after completion by a qualified structural engineer employed by Pontifract town council.
Scarborough Spa roof balustrade restoration.
The finished job which included replacing missing castings, all cast from originals . this meant that we saved on the cost of patterns.
We also cleaned and re-coated all the existing railings that we could save. This photo shows two of the four sides we restored.
This is how the roof was when we were asked to carry out the work. notice the missing panels, main posts and several finials.
I am told that the Spa buildings were damaged during the second world war and my Aunty Muriel was tasked by her employers at the time to assess the damage shortly after the end of the war obviously never got round to carrying out the repairs till now.
Studley Roger St. Mary’s Church.

Overthrow to the gate from York minster Yard to the Treasures House
This is the first piece of restoration work Don undertook.
He was working at Bootham Engineers as a buyer when he was asked if he could restore this gate overthrow for York Minster.
He immediately volunteered and his ironwork restoration story began. this was in 1976 and was the trigger for him to use his skills to restore ancient ironwork.
New gated entrance to Duck House Studley Roger, Ripon.
As this was a listed entrance it took a long time for me to get permission to add the two new gate pillars, gates and railings which are all new. the original stone pillars are the two at the left and right in the picture. I also designed and made the bronze signs on the pillars This view is looking towards Ripon Cathedral on the extreme right in the distance. Sadly could not get the gates to close as they are automatic.
New arch overthrow for the entrance to Studley Royal Park, National Trust, Ripon. This was made to an original photograph taken in the early days of photography. The church in the mist is St Mary’s at the top of the hill in the park.
